Team ATK lands 1st and 2nd despite the high attrition rate

With 239 starters, and only 82 finishers, Team ATK proved itself once again with a great start to the 2010 season at the Best In The Desert (BITD) Blue Water Resorts Parker 425 in Parker, Arizona. Running not only their race proven Jeepspeed Unlimited ATK Wrangler driven by Jon Krellwitz with co-driver Skyler Gambrell, but a vintage Baja winning class 6 Jeep Cherokee that fit the rules for the BITD 7200 unlimited mini truck class; prepped at the last minute by CROSSROADS Fabrication to be driven by Darren Skilton with co-driver Flynn Sizemore at his side.

Breezing through the BITD technical inspections the day before the race, the sun was shining and spirits were high. There was even talk that the weather reports of rain on race day were going to turn out to be wrong. With a 6am wake up call, the team was loaded up and ready for staging by 7am. Skilton was off the line around 8:30 with Krellwitz just behind him, second to last off the line in his class at 9am. Both vehicles ran clean through the first lap, Krellwitz passing all his competition in the first 4 miles of the race and pushing hard all the way through the first lap to produce a huge lead. Gambrell later commented, “We were on a terror.” Both cars paused briefly at main pit only minutes apart from each other to take on some fuel, give the cars a good once over, and don some rain gear. Lap two was off to a good start as long as you didn’t count the torrential rain pour that greeting the drivers as they pulled out.

With a comfortable lead, Gambrell made Krellwitz lay off the gas pedal a bit during the second lap to run a more conservative pace while still maintaining the lead. Krellwitz noted, “It got a little cold and rainy on our second lap, but thankfully it wasn’t as bad as last year’s Parker downpour”.  Winding up their second lap the steering ram on the jeep failed just 10 miles from the finish.  Thankfully, Krellwitz and Gambrell had developed enough of a lead to limp the car the few remaining miles and still retain the class win.

Late in the day, the race weather turned from bad to worse, and with an additional lap to finish than the Wrangler, Darren Skilton and Flynn Sizemore pulled into main pit a second time after fixing a flat in the field to discover a bad ball joint that needed replacing. Patrick Smith of “Smith Race Wire” luckily had all the parts that were needed to fix it, and with the help of the Fabtech crew, Team ATK soon had the mini truck on the move again. Battling the rain and cold, Skilton wound up having to drive through flooding washes and huge mud bogs in the dark. Sizemore later commented, “I’ve never watched a river form before my eyes.”  Maneuvering from side to side and trying to stay atop the deluge of water, Skilton managed to be one of very few drivers who made it through to the finish. Second place in his class and one of only two finishers in a class of 22 competitors, even he wasn’t sure he was going to make it. Frozen and exhausted, Skilton and Sizemore were greeted by the rest of a very relieved Team ATK who, just an hour earlier had been planning an extraction strategy, after they hadn’t had word from BITD or Midway pit crew as to the cars location in over 3 hours.

Seemingly known to be a fast course, the Parker 425, with it’s deja vu weather patterns, rugged sand washes, and limited line options, is proving itself to be a deceptively tough course, weeding out the best of the best, and yet again putting team ATK at the top.

Dakar BLOG CUATRO

Home safe and sound….it was a good trip, but way too short.  We all seriously contemplated missing our flight, heading west to Mendoza (Argentine wine country) and meeting back up with the Rally as it made its way back to Argentina from Chile.  There will be a next time though I’m sure….

We stayed night 2 in the bivouac in Cordoba with the Skilton Press Truck again and it was a good experience.  Pat and I can’t get away from working on cars though, even on vacation.   This is Darren Skilton’s explanation from another site of the mornings experience.
“This morning I was awoken at 5am by the panicked voice on the Tundra’s codriver. On the morning first special stage they had filled the 2010 Tundra with Diesel fuel! Drained the tank and got it running then in quit. They had gotten in to camp and worked all night but it would not run. All the work, all the time and all the money and now they were about to be out or the rally on the first day. Jon Krellwitz and Pat Smith who I race with in Baja were with us for the first three days so we headed over to the truck. Pat realized there was an electrical short and that was what killed the car. Three hours later working in a monsoon and covered with mud the team was dejected and we had given up, almost. With 30 minutes to spare we found the electrical short we had been looking for and she fired. Pat and Jon saved the day big time. I think they were invited to move to Argentina.”

Pat and I have seriously been considering taking them up on the offer…haha.

We finished up our last day in Argentina with an early morning and record time 800 K drive from San Luis to Buenos Aires, checked into our hotel, returned our rental fiat econobox (2200 K total miles in 5 days), grabbed a quick dinner (which is 2 hours in Argentina), had a glass of blue label scotch to toast our adventure, and topped it off with a Tango Show.

Awesome country, incredible race, and a great time with friends.

I included some pics of the impressive hummer work area on the night 2 bivouac and some of Pat and myself working on the Tundra Day 3 race morning.  Good times…

If you want to follow more of the Race, check out Boyd Jaynes BLOG He is traveling with the Skilton Press truck for the remainder of the event.

Long story short…the first couple days of the Dakar were awesome to check out…and Argentina is a great country so far.  Here are a few pics off my camera…i’m heading out to dinner but i’ll try and get some more pics up and some more details of our experience in the next day or two.

Cheers!

Dakar BLOG DOS

We didnt make it back over to scrutineering today…decided to check out down town Buenos Aires instead and get our rental car sorted out.   I think we got the last rental car in Buenos Aires, literally….a stunning FIAT sub compact…gonna be an interesting week in it once we hit the road.  Driving around Buenos Aires has been “exciting” the last few hours….FYI, the E brake for tight cornering is working well.

The city was great, stopped into a local wine shop, checked out a big cemetery where Eva Peron (Evita) is buried, and had a good time just walking around.   We walked through the financial district and discovered and interesting Argentinian custom…everybody throws their calendars out of their high rise windows on the last day of the year…the sky’s/streets were littered everywhere with pages of calendars…”should old appointments be forgot”? haha, maybe something got lost in translation.

Heading to a party on the roof of our Hotel in a few minutes…Viva Buenos Aires!

Happy New Year!

Dakar BLOG UNO

Last night was a rough night….went to bed about the time the sun came up.  Irish Car bombs, Jameson shots, wine, beer, steak, empenadas….good times.

Got a bit of a late start but did spend most of the afternoon/evenening in scrutineering helping Darren, Boyd, Duelly, and Harry get the MAN truck through.  Pretty impressive show here, tons of people, lots of really impressive bikes and cars.

Coolest thing…VW Amarok Tieter Totter section on the test course….oddest thing, dinasaur zoo exibit in the middle of the Dakar Scrutineering area.

Off to dinner, hopefully tonight will be a little earlier to bed than last….

Back to Back Baja 1000 Victories

Team ATK Skilton/Krellwitz Jeep Wrangler Score Back to Back Baja 1000 Victories

The ATK powered Jeep proved its toughness once again at this year’s 42nd running of the SCORE Baja 1000 when it crossed the finish line in Ensenada, Mexico after 24 hours and 11 minutes of brutal Baja racing, besting all class competitors for a second straight Baja 1000 class 3 victory.  The race marked 9 wins in 10 races for the ATK Jeep, including two Baja 1000’s and a Baja 500.

Darren Skilton, along with co-driver Skyler Gambrell, piloted the race Jeep for the first 400 miles of the event; charging from the rear start position in Class 3 (short wheel base 4wd) to the front of the pack in the first 15 miles of the course.  They went on to tackle the treacherous Sierra de Juarez summit and the rough and rocky San Felipe loop through the Matomi Wash. They handed the car off to Jon Krellwitz and Patrick Smith at the BFG pit just north of San Felipe in Borrego at 11 o’clock pm with a 50 mile lead on the nearest class competitor. Averaging 38 miles per/hour and passing nearly 100 cars in the first 400 miles of the race, Skilton stepped out of the vehicle to comment that, “This ATK Jeep is one tough vehicle, I drove it hard all day and it took the beating with ease.”

Krellwitz and Smith had an issue with the transfer case around mile 460 and had to limp the car out to pit at mile 490.  Additional time was lost at mile 472 when the Jeep was held up for 2 1/2 hours behind one of Baja’s infamous bottle necks as another competitor was unable to negotiate a river crossing.  The transfer case was swapped out and Gambrell got back in the passenger seat for the ride up the pacific coast, across the rocky silt hills of Urapan, and on to the finish and the victory. Krellwitz said at the finish, “It was a long but good day for the ATK Jeep, the 4.7 ATK stroker engine pulled hard from start to finish and our BFG tires hooked up good with no flat tires.  It was a bummer to have an issue with the t case up in the Mikes loop and get stuck in the bottle neck, but the course was very challenging and made for a great adventure, plus its always good to have a class win in Baja.”

Big Thank you to the following crew members who helped make Team ATK a success:

Clive Skilton – Darren Skilton – Jon Krellwitz – Skyler Gambrell – Patrick Smith – Kris Hernandez – Russ Ficker

Also a HUGE thank you for all the products that make this vehicle so tough:

ATK Engines – Currie Enterprises – Crossroads Fabrication – KC Lights – BFGoodrich Tires – JE Reel Drivelines – Advanced Engine Management (AEM) – Howe Steering – King Shocks – Beard Seats – Harmon Racing Cells – Full Traction Suspension – PWR – American Racing ATX Wheels  – Borla Exhaust – Torque
